MYM]Grubby: Concept Builds
Concept Builds
When starting a game of Warcraft III against an opponent who seeks to exploit your weaknesses, it pays to set up your base as perfectly as you can. If you know your own base better than your opponent does, you can gain opportunities to trap him inside. You’ll be able to escape into your own base more fluently and you can afford to creep one more creep camp before being forced to Teleport home. There are plenty of advantages to make it worth your while to develop your Concept Builds.
Your ‘build order’ and ‘base lay-out’ together combine your Base Build. When do you make what building, and how will you position them? Different races attack your base in different ways, so there’s no one-size-fits-all. Additionally, building your base the same way every single time is not only hard to remember, but can also be predictable. Remember, only you know what your base is going to look like from the start of a game – though if you construct your base the same as the last 500 games you played, even your least observant opponent will know he shouldn’t enter your 1-opening base.
The lay-out of your base can be irrelevant if the opponent never reaches your base, in which case I would congratulate you on your aggression and success in keeping him away. However, just because he didn’t come to your base doesn’t mean that your base was perfect. Sometimes the ways your buildings are positioned can be crucial – though never more game-breaking than when you get Tower Rushed. It is when you get Tower Rushed that one truly learns how your own base can sometimes work against you.
This is where Concept Builds come in. A Concept Build is what I like to call an idea for a proper base-build given a certain situation. Firstly you have to determine how liable your opponent is to harass or push you. In the Orc vs. Human match-up it’s common knowledge that Human has many windows of opportunity to Tower Rush the Orc. It can happen as early as Tier 1 just three or four minutes into the game or it can happen during early or late Tier 2, with or without Caster support from the Human. I’m sure that one day we could see a popularised Tier 3 Tower Attack – God save us. Having lost against the most Stupid Tower Rushes ever, I’ve decided that it makes sense to prepare for Tower Rushes in advance. Being that the opportunities for Human are so plentiful, it’s best to start preparation early, so that you may worry less about it later.
As I said, it may not be wise to build your base identically each and every time, but you can follow certain principles. I will give you a list of these principles† based on a Timeline of the game.

01:05 As early as 10 seconds into the game, you have to decide where to place your first Orc Burrow. Apart from the usual controversial Rally Spam, use these 10 seconds to determine what your base is going to look like. Leave room for a Watch Tower which would protect a large part of the front of your base†. Keep in mind to keep at least one space (1×1) in between the potential Watch Tower (2×2) and your Great Hall* (it’s best to measure this off with a Burrow (3×3).

02:43 Teching at around 02:43 is the regular rhythm for the Orc Build Order. At this time, your second Burrow will have been built. In this case, it’s the second Burrow that borders the Barracks. Especially for this one, you need to have a 3-space room so that you can build a Watch Tower there while still keeping the way open for a Demolisher’s escape†.

03:15 Actively seek out the Human†. It’s never good to have no clue what the Human is doing. When both of you creep without conflict, as a general rule it’s always better for the Human. Stay on him at all times – see the Grunt seeking out the Archmage at the green camp. On TM, send out your Far Seer right away to harass peasants and his creeping. Remember that he can creep the Laboratory quickly.

04:44 Prepare for a Tier 2 harass or Tower push by constructing a War Mill before you make your 3rd Grunt†. This way you can set up a Watch Tower when Tier 2 finishes. Make the Tower and your Tech buildings before you train your Hero.

This is basically the 1.21 nightmare strat for ORC to counter.
Interesting to see Grubbys counter to it.
Hopefully Blizzard hold true to what they said and will nerf peasent repair time next patch.

I wrote this article a few weeks ago, before anyone had seen me apply this strategy yet. Until now, I've played fast warmill / tower quite a few times with good success vs towers. You can find replays of it on most sites I guess.

Nice one, You should think about writing some articles covering entire MU's or entire strategies and sell them to ppl or some gaming sites, that would probably work well considering how much the vast majority of wc3 players can and want to learn from You. And thats not even considering the "Grubby" brand name effect :)
And good luck in MYM, been a fan of Yours since forever^^

Thank-you. I haven't been towered since reading this, but I still implement. It helps greatly when they do attack. B4 reading this, I knew a tower somewhere would at least help against a TR, but the where and when is indisposable bro.
